Since I have been leading theater companies for most of my career, my directing assignments have been influenced by the artistic direction for my audiences. Fortunately, the range of theaters and communities has been huge - from coast to coast - so I have gotten many opportunities to stretch and learn. In fact, since I started running theaters instead of going to grad school, I have learned my craft experientially and alongside some terrific other directors. Being Edward Payson Call's assistant for the first three years of the Denver Center Theatre Company was also a substitute for an MFA. I have been greatly influenced by the architecture of each venue, and the make-up of each audience. I tend to fit the directing approach to both of these factors, since my job is to make the most successful event in performance: an event that communicates the artistic impulse of the writer and creative team.
